Tom Hanks, Tom Brokaw, Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Secretary of Veterans Affairs Robert McDonald joined Senator Elizabeth Dole in Washington, DC today to launch Hidden Heroes, a groundbreaking campaign created by the Elizabeth Dole Foundation to call vital attention to America’s 5.5 million military and veteran caregivers. As campaign chair, Hanks presided over the launch that included a series of major announcements and commitments that will bring critical resources to those caring for wounded, ill and injured service members and veterans.

Pastors Joel and Victoria Osteen continue to raise awareness and support for military caregivers by highlighting the Elizabeth Dole Foundation at events across the nation. Videos telling the stories of caregivers are now showing at Night of Hope events, hosted by Joel Osteen Ministries.
Too often, men and women are left so tortured by the sacrifices they have made in service to our nation that they choose to end their lives. The inner turmoil and physical pain they experience can be so great that in many cases it transfers to the loved ones caring for them at home. As a result, some of our military and veteran caregivers also consider suicide as their only escape from the stress and pain they are experiencing on the home front.

In recognition of this year’s National Family Caregiver Month theme “Respite Care,” the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s Respite Impact Council has released a definitional document that will guide the future work of the Council. This document has been developed by the experts who provide respite and those who benefit from it.
