Thanksgiving 2005 gave Alex more than one reason to be thankful; that year, she met Sergeant Brian Wilhelm. In 2003, Brian had survived an RPG blast outside of Balad, Iraq, that took his left leg and left him with mild traumatic brain injuries. By 2006, Alex was scheduling doctor’s appointments for him, paying his bills, grocery shopping for both of their households, and assisting with the most basic of tasks, such as helping him shave and reminding him to shower. Now, with Alex’s help Brian is working towards a degree in computer science and has a renewed sense of purpose. Together, Brian and Alex have embraced a new normal.
