General Eric Shinseki served our country honorably both on the battlefield and in his public service for more than forty years. He and his family deserve our respect and thanks for the sacrifices they have made for their fellow countrymen. At the same time, it is clear that the Department of Veterans Affairs requires a total overhaul to live up to this nation’s sacred vow to take care of those who cared for us. This is not a time for partisanship and finger pointing. It is a time to find solutions for the millions of men, women, and families the VA serves. To be successful we need to put everything on the table: analyze, identify, and address systemic and root issues at the VA and fully harness the power of the public, private, and nonprofit sectors in presenting holistic support for military families. We stand ready to assist these efforts and we will continue to encourage swift but effective action to permanently remedy the longstanding issues that have plagued the VA system.
