WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Elizabeth Dole Foundation today announced the election of Jim Rechtin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Humana Inc., and Tim Walsh, Chair and Chief Executive Officer of KPMG LLP, to its Board of Directors. Their appointments bring leadership from a Fortune 50 healthcare company and one of the world’s leading professional services firms to the Foundation’s mission of strengthening support systems for America’s military and veteran caregivers. Their appointments come at a time when the challenges facing America’s caregivers are gaining long-overdue national attention and leaders across healthcare, business, and government are increasingly recognizing the critical role caregivers play in supporting our nation’s veterans.
“Jim and Tim are proven leaders who understand how institutions—from healthcare systems to global companies—can work together to solve big challenges,” said Bob McDonald, Chairman of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation Board of Directors and the 8th Secretary of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. “Their insight and experience will help guide the Foundation as we continue expanding our reach and impact on behalf of military and veteran caregivers.”
Rechtin and Walsh bring deep expertise building systems and partnerships at scale—critical assets as the Foundation expands its work to support the nation's 14.3 million military and veteran caregivers through advocacy, cross-sector partnerships, and community-based initiatives designed to strengthen the support networks caregivers depend on every day.
“Military and veteran caregivers have spent far too long serving in the shadows. The momentum building around caregiving today presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity to change that,” said Steve Schwab, CEO of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. “Leaders like Jim Rechtin and Tim Walsh understand how to turn awareness into action, and their leadership will help us drive the partnerships and solutions caregivers across the country urgently need.”
As President and CEO of Humana Inc., Rechtin leads one of the nation’s largest health and wellness companies focused on helping people achieve their best health through integrated care and innovative health solutions. Rechtin has spent his career advancing healthcare delivery models that improve access, outcomes, and coordination of care. His leadership across healthcare, technology, and public service aligns closely with the Foundation’s efforts to strengthen the systems that military and veteran caregivers depend on every day.
“Caregivers are the backbone of recovery and long-term well-being — yet their invaluable contributions are often unrecognized,” said Jim Rechtin. “Having spent much of my career working to improve how care is delivered, I’m honored to join the Elizabeth Dole Foundation and support its work to strengthen the healthcare, community, and policy systems caregivers rely on.”
Walsh serves as Chair and CEO of KPMG LLP, leading one of the world’s foremost professional services firms providing innovative business solutions and audit, tax, and advisory services to many of the world’s largest and most prestigious organizations. His experience helping organizations navigate transformation and build resilient institutions will support the Foundation’s continued efforts to scale solutions for caregivers nationwide.
“Military and veteran caregivers represent one of the most extraordinary examples of service in our country today,” said Tim Walsh. “Businesses have an important role to play in supporting them—through innovation, partnership, and sustained commitment. I’m proud to join the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s Board and help mobilize more leaders across the private sector to stand with caregivers and their families.”
