Military Caregivers Are America's Next Great Bipartisan Win
Military and veteran caregivers have answered every call. Now it is Washington’s turn.
In a new op-ed published in The Hill, The Honorable Bob McDonald, Chair of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation Board of Directors and former Secretary of Veterans Affairs, and Steve Schwab, CEO of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, call on Congress to advance three bipartisan legislative priorities that would strengthen support for military and veteran caregivers and their families: 1) Sharri Briley and Eric Edmundson Veterans Benefits Expansion Act; 2) CHAMPVA Children’s Care Protection Act; 3) Veteran Caregiver Re-education, Re-employment, and Retirement Act.
Today, 14.3 million Americans are caring for a wounded, ill, or injured service member or veteran. They provide at least $119 billion in unpaid care each year, while too many face financial strain, lost income, and long-term consequences to their health, careers, and futures.
Supporting caregivers is not a political calculation. It is a national responsibility.
