How did your life change when you became a caregiver?

Before becoming a caregiver, I enjoyed volunteering and buying houses that needed renovations. I met my care recipient, Michael, while volunteering for a local chapter of DAV (Disabled American Veterans). After getting to know each other, he asked me to help with his care. Accepting that role meant giving up full-time employment and my volunteer work, as Michael needs 24-hour assistance.

What are your biggest challenges as a caregiver?

My primary challenge has been the loss of income, since my caregiving responsibilities don’t leave me time to maintain a full-time job. I’ve also neglected my own health to keep up with my veteran’s healthcare.

How do you maintain your own well-being?

Participating in outreach programs and events for veterans and their families has been good for both my veteran and for me. Recently, I’ve been able to go back to work and continue to advocate for veterans and caregivers; I am a Health Insurance Broker and Notary Public specializing in veteran and caregiver health insurance education resources.
