What was life like before you were a caregiver?

I have been a caregiver for almost my entire life. My dad was injured when I was 3 years old. This is all I know, this is my normal.

What are your biggest challenges as a caregiver?

My biggest challenge as a young caregiver is balancing my work and caregiving, while still trying to be a young adult. I often had to remind myself I was still a child at the time. It was hard to have a social life, go to school, and enter the work force when I knew what was at home.  I often felt (and still feel) selfish when taking time for myself. There is a huge lack of caregiving support, especially in the Midwest, and especially for children.

What resources or support networks do you utilize?

The Hidden Helpers Coalition with the Elizabeth Dole Foundation was lifesaving. It allowed me to connect with others who knew what it was like to grow up caregiving. This program helped me find my voice and truly share my story. They taught me how to advocate for what I believe in.
