Attending the Elizabeth Dole Foundation’s Heroes & History Makers celebration in Washington, DC was a meaningful reminder of how many of us have been caregivers long before we ever recognized the role. In my case, caregiving started early—first for my siblings as the oldest of five in a single-parent household, later as a U.S. Army veteran caring for my wife after her traumatic brain and spinal injuries, and for our daughter, who has learning disabilities. At 24, becoming a full-time caregiver felt less like a new title and more like a lifelong continuation of showing up because someone had to.

What changed for me wasn’t the work—it was discovering a community. Becoming a Dole Caregiver Fellow connected me to other caregivers who understood the weight of this responsibility. The Elizabeth Dole Foundation gave me tools, resources, and a peer network that helped me stop compartmentalizing and start sharing the journey rather than carrying it alone.

Here in Texas, many spouses, parents, children, and neighbors are caregivers without realizing it. I hope they see themselves in my story and know the Elizabeth Dole Foundation is here for them. When caregivers are supported, our veterans, families, and communities are stronger.
