When Melissa married Sean in 1995, he was already a combat veteran who had served in Operation Desert Storm. It was his return to Iraq in 2006, though, when their lives changed forever. A mortar blast struck Sean and left with him a traumatic brain injury. Due to the blast, he’s now legally blind and struggling with PTSD. Melissa quit her career of 15 years teaching special education and became a certified caregiver through the Department of Veterans Affairs. Now, she assists Sean with his everyday tasks and raises their three children. Knowing the challenges military caregivers face, Melissa gives back as a volunteer with Family of a Vet and Blinded Veterans of America.
