On July 28, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce – one of the first organizations to pledge its support to caregivers by joining Hidden Heroes: The National Coalition for Military and Veteran Caregivers – hosted a Hiring Our Heroes Caregiver Networking Reception in Washington, DC. The event was specifically designed to offer those caring for wounded service members and veterans the opportunity to develop a professional network and learn how to position themselves for jobs that match their interest, skills and caregiving schedule. Senator Elizabeth Dole and U.S. Chamber of Commerce President and CEO, Tom Donohue delivered remarks to commemorate the occasion and emphasize the importance of supporting employment opportunities for military and veteran caregivers.
The Foundation-commissioned RAND report called attention to the workplace challenges faced by those caring for service members and veterans. The report found 63% of post-9/11 caregivers are employed, underscoring their valuable role as a source of income for their households. Unfortunately, caregiving responsibilities often threaten their ability to work. Forty-eight percent of caregivers have reported having to take unpaid time off from work, or stopping work temporarily. Twenty-eight percent of caregivers responded that they have had to quit working entirely.
More than 130 individuals and employers RSVPed for the Hiring Our Heroes reception, marking fantastic participation for the inaugural event. On October 30, the U.S. Chamber will host an employment symposium for caregivers as part of its ongoing commitment to our Hidden Heroes. The Foundation will share more details on the symposium soon.
